Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine whether the volatility of returns in commodity (gold, oil), bond and forex markets is related over time to the volatility of returns in equity markets of Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, Philippines, Turkey and Vietnam. In addition, the authors analyze the integration of the commodity, bond, forex and equity markets across these markets.

Design/methodology/approach

The dynamic conditional correlation GARCH (DCC-GARCH) model is used to capture the time-varying conditional correlation among markets. The authors use daily data of stock prices, oil prices, gold prices, exchange rates and 10 years' bond yields of the six countries from Datastream and investing.com from January 2001 to April 2021.

Findings

Findings reveal that the parameters of dynamic correlation are statistically significant which indicates the importance of time-varying co-movements. Estimation of the DCC-GARCH model suggests that the stock market is significantly correlated with bond, forex, gold and oil markets in all six countries.

Practical implications

This study has practical implications for policymakers and investment professionals. A better understanding of dynamic linkages among the markets would help in constructing effective hedging and portfolio diversification strategies. Policy makers can get insight to build proper strategies in order to insulate the economy from factors that cause volatility.

Originality/value

Several studies have investigated the linkage between commodity and stock markets and the volatility spillover effect, but very little attention is given to study the interrelationship between groups of market segments of different economies. No study has comparatively examined the dynamic relationship of multiple markets of a group of emerging countries simultaneously.

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of interest free micro credit loans on the lives and business of the female borrowers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of interest free micro credit loans on the lives and business of the female borrowers.

Design/methodology/approach

Both primary and secondary data have been used. Case studies of four different female entrepreneurs have been included as part of the research. The observation was conducted over an extended period of time. Subsequently, interviews were conducted with four beneficiaries to know the role played by interest free micro credit loans in improving (or not!) their lives and businesses.

Findings

Interest free micro credit loans played a significant role in bringing a positive change in the lives of the borrowers. Clients mentioned that “zero interest rate” and “flexible repayment schedules” were the main reason for obtaining loans from this source. Further, they suggested that there is a need for training/workshops, feedback/monitoring, networking and online repayment system to make interest free micro credit loans more successful.

Research limitations/implications

The focus of the study is limited to only four female borrowers in Karachi. Future studies can include other cities and cross-gender comparisons for better understating.

Practical implications

This study will help microfinance organizations to assess the problems faced by the borrowers; it will also shed light on the motivations of borrowers.

Originality/value

Interest free micro credit loans were provided to women entrepreneurs in a social experiment and implications were observed.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore on stagnation point flow of Ag-CuO/water over a horizontal stretching/shrinking cylinder by adding the effect of chemical reaction, B together with the magnetic field, M.

Design/methodology/approach

A set of reduced ordinary differential equations from the governing equations of partial differential equations is obtained through similarities requirements. The resulting equations are solved using bvp4c in MATLAB2019a. The impact of various physical parameters such as curvature parameter, ϒ, chemical reaction rate, B, magnetic field, M and Schmidt numbers, Sc on shear stress, f0 local heat flux, -θ(0) and mass transfer, -(0) also for velocity, f(η), temperature, θ(η) and concentration, ∅(η) profiles have been plotted and briefly discussed. In this work, some vital characteristics such as local skin friction, Cf, local Nusselt number, Nux and local Sherwood number, Shx are chosen for physical and numerical analysis.

Findings

The findings expose that the duality of solutions appears in a shrinking region ( ε < 0). The value of skin friction, heat transfer rate and mass transfer rate reduction for existing of M, but in contrary result obtain for larger ϒ, B and Sc. Furthermore, the hybrid nanofluid demonstrates better heat transfer compared to nanofluid.

Practical implications

The hybrid nanofluid has widened its applications such as in electronic cooling, manufacturing, automotive, heat exchanger, solar energy, heat pipes and biomedical, as their efficiency in the heat transfer field is better compared to nanofluid.

Originality/value

The findings on stagnation point flow of Ag-CuO/water over a horizontal stretching/shrinking cylinder with the effect of chemical reaction, B and magnetic field, M is new and the originality is preserved for the benefits of future researchers.
